Innovative services to benefit today’s ever-changing society

Yves Verschueren, Chief Executive Officer essenscia

The chemical, plastics and pharmaceutical industry is playing a leading role within our society, striving to become more sustainable. The solutions it offers are numerous and varied. Agriculture, transport, the construction sector, health care, household goods, the climate … all of these are areas where the contributions by chemistry and life sciences are of paramount importance towards the creation of a better and more sustainable future.

This fourth sustainability report presented by essenscia illustrates,
on the basis of many examples, how rapidly science is evolving
and being at the service of solutions that make the integration of the three most significant pillars of sustainable development possible: “People”, “Planet” and “Prosperity”. Furthermore, essenscia fully subscribes to the United Nations’ global goals concerning sustainable development (Global goals www.globalgoals.org/news/goals). These goals are stated in the present report when they are related to the indicators used.

Chemistry is a fantastic science that enables us to modulate and adapt matter in function of its capacity to enhance our societal well-being in a constantly changing world. The risks that accompany innovation need to be assessed objectively and correctly estimated within a framework of preventative parameters. The chemical and pharmaceutical industry is investing major sums in research and development in order to be able to offer guarantees in a number of essential areas such as maximum consumer safety, minimum environmental impact and more efficient performance.

The industrial activities within the chemical and pharmaceutical sector in Belgium continue their progress towards sustainable development. This journey is never quite at an end. Hence, the current issue presents, for the first time, a new indicator on resource efficiency. This report thus offers you, by means of a simple, easily accessible structure, an overview on the progress that has been realized in Belgium by an industry that remains convinced of its undoubted growth potential within our country.

essenscia and the sector

essenscia npo (Non-Profit Organisation)*, the Belgian chemical industry and life sciences federation, is a multi-sector umbrella organisation. That means it covers the numerous fields of activity within the chemical, plastics and life sciences industries.

essenscia represents nearly 800 companies, which together account for more than 95% of the sector’s total turnover. What specifically does essenscia do for its members? The essenscia team offers members information, specialised services and customised advice. Furthermore essenscia defends the sector’s interests on a European, federal and regional level, doing so through its active presence in Cefic (European Chemical Industry Council), FEB (Federation of Enterprises in Belgium), VOKA (Flemish Network of Enterprises) and UWE (Walloon Union of Enterprises) and through participation in various councils and advisory bodies.

Sustainable development is central to essenscia’s mission: The world is facing important challenges in the use of energy, natural resources, and the provision of food, water and health for its population. Chemistry and Life Sciences are essential to making the world’s development sustainable. Our innovative research is crucial to the development of new products, applications and services. Our industry is central to a successful future and to improving everyone’s quality of life.’

Over the years, the chemical, plastics and life sciences sector in Belgium has developed into one that is extremely diversified. Our companies’ industrial activities are highly diverse, being active in organic and inorganic base chemistry, biotechnology and plastics and rubber processing. They manufacture pharmaceutical products, products for agriculture, paints, varnishes, glues, cosmetics, detergents and other chemical products. In short, our sector is one of Belgium’s most important branches of industry, and a driving force behind the Belgian economy.

This report illustrates how the companies within our sector actually realise essenscia’s mission every day. The indicators under the sections ‘People, Planet and Prosperity’ demonstrate how these companies operate in a sustainable fashion. Under ‘Products’, it is made clear how these products are employed safely and at the same time sustainably. It is primarily illustrated here how these products succeed in jointly shaping a sustainable society, and how they help tackle the major social challenges effectively.
