41% of total installed CHP electrical capacity

  • Cogeneration (Combined Heat and Power or CHP) – the simultaneous production of heat and electrical or mechanical power – offers primary energy savings compared with separate production and consumption of electricity and heat. Primary energy savings made by the sector in Belgium thanks to quality cogeneration are estimated at 5300 GWh. This is about the quantity of energy that is necessary to supply 150,000 households.
  • The big increase in CHP plants in the chemical and life sciences industry was driven by the strong development of the sector in the 1990s and accelerated by the switch from oil to gas and after the government promoted cogeneration in its policy.
  • In the meantime, under the current economic circumstances and energy needs, the development of cogeneration in the sector seems to have stabilised. With an installed cogeneration capacity of 999 MWe in 2013 (the equivalent of one nuclear power plant), the sector represents 41% of the total electrical cogeneration capacity in Belgium.

Greater energy efficiency with the Kaneka combined heat and power installation

For ten years now, Kaneka has been actively engaged in improving its energy efficiency, without compromising on production. The result is a 20% improvement of its energy efficiency compared with 2010. This figure didn’t come about by chance, but rather is the outcome of years of endeavours in the field of energy management, the focus of which was to attain the ISO 50001 in October 2012. At present, Kaneka is still pursuing this approach in a resolute fashion.

Investing in a combined heat and power installation (CHP installation) features within this sustainable energy strategy. Kaneka sees a number of advantages in this, in both an economic and social sense. “As a Japanese company, we are extremely committed to our environment and we believe it stands to reason to make efforts to be socially responsible. Energy and CO2 savings are therefore also a part of this”, says Stany Van Haver, production manager at Kaneka.

The CHP installation consists of 2 gas motors each with a capacity of 2 MWe. Besides electricity, these gas motors each produce 1.416 kW in hot water and 740 kW in steam. Through a heat network, this energy production supplements the heat demand of three dry processes. When calculating the size of the installation, the use of radiant or residual heat is also taken into account and warm air is sent to their technical workshop and the warehouse.
