Every year, employees of essenscie and the European umbrella organisation PlasticsEurope, along with other volunteers, roll up their sleeves to clean up litter in the Galgeschoor nature reserve in the port of Antwerp. This annual initiative by the Antwerp Port Authority and Natuurpunt is part of the Clean Schelde project.

The eighth clean-up campaign in the Galgeschoor nature reserve – over 100 hectares in size – on 9 March 2019 saw 440 volunteers turn up. The effect of the tide means this nature reserve, which is home to huge numbers of migratory birds, has very specific plant growth. Unfortunately, an average of over 6 tonnes of waste is collected during the annual litter clearance campaigns.
